I looked at the market, looked at trends, and realized that if we diversified and became a one-stop technology provider, then we would have an advantage in the market. But as the saying goes, when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. It was a rough time, considering that my first child was born in the midst of all those troubles. Many IT companies that survived the dotcom slowdown went belly up with the new crisis, and former competitors even came to us looking for work. “In spite of your efforts, some customers are going to leave you for reasons over which you have absolutely no control,” he said, “as long as your company gains far more customers than it loses, then you’re good”.ĭuring the real estate and financial crash of 2007/2008 we lost a lot of customers because 90 percent of our customer base was either directly or indirectly involved with both markets. He told me that regardless of what we did, we would lose at least one customer every year. It was my accountant who gave me some wise words based on his vast experience. I’ve always had very high standards so I would make every effort to retain customers, and when we did lose a customer I would ask myself, where did we go wrong? The road has not always been smooth, but I’ve learned to navigate the rough patches.

Unfortunately, that company went out of business, but before that happened I had started RoboteK.Įven though the dotcom boom had passed, technology had become very much an integral part of everyone’s lives, and with my exposure to telephony, electronics, and computing, my company could offer something not many companies could.

Instead, I was hired by a Software and web development company in South Florida that had offices in Colombia and Brazil, so I stayed in South Florida. I already spoke fluent Spanish and Brazil’s economy was growing so I wanted to move there to perfect my Portuguese. At ITT I studied Computer Network Engineering, and after that, I was thinking of moving to Brazil. I enrolled in ITT Tech at the Davie campus and later transferred to the Tampa campus. I had studied electrical installation and electronics at the University of Technology in Jamaica (formerly College of Arts Science and Technology), but the writing was on the wall, computing was taking over the world. I was very meticulous and by the book so I got the name nickname “Robotech” which was a play on ‘Robocop’.
